They use powerful blades and variable speeds to achieve different textures, from silky smooth to slightly chunky, depending on your baby’s age and readiness.

For new parents, a blender is incredibly convenient because it reduces prep time and ensures consistent results. Instead of manually mashing food, which can be uneven and tiring, a blender transforms ingredients into perfect purees within seconds. This makes it easier to prepare fresh baby meals daily or in batches that can be stored safely for later.

Using a blender for baby food offers several advantages: nutritional, practical, and economic. First, you have complete control over ingredients. You can choose fresh produce, adjust flavours, and ensure meals are free from additives, extra salt, or sugar. This gives your baby a nutritious and natural start to solids.

A blender also helps you achieve the ideal texture for every stage of weaning. At around 6 months, babies need very smooth purees. As they grow, usually between 7 and 9 months, you can gradually move to thicker and slightly chunkier textures to support chewing skills. A blender, juicer, or mixer-grinder allows you to adjust this with ease.

Another benefit is variety. Almost any ingredient can be turned into a puree: fruits, vegetables, pulses, cereals, etc. You can steam them, blend them, and create imaginative combinations that help your baby develop a diverse palate. Instead of relying on store-bought options, you get to serve fresh, flavourful meals prepared at home.

Lastly, using your blender helps reduce food waste. You can puree small portions of cooked vegetables or fruits and use them to make meals for your baby. This makes your kitchen routine more sustainable and economical.

Simple Steps: How to Puree Baby Food in a Blender

Pureeing baby food is much easier than it seems. The basic process involves preparing your ingredients, cooking them if needed, adding a little liquid, and blending until you reach the desired consistency.

Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide, using the example provided:

1. Choose Your Ingredients

Start with fresh, seasonal produce. When your baby begins solids at around 6 months, it’s best to begin with single-ingredient purees. Good options include:

  • Banana
  • Apple
  • Sweet potato
  • Butternut squash
  • Carrot
  • Pear
  • Pumpkin

As your baby grows, you can introduce lentils, kidney beans, etc.

2. Decide Whether to Cook or Use Raw

Some purees can be made with raw ingredients. For example:

  • A ripe banana can be mashed or blended with a little water or milk.
  • Ripe avocados can also be blended without cooking.

However, many fruits and vegetables must be cooked to achieve the right softness and digestibility. Ingredients like sweet potatoes, apples, carrots, pumpkins, and squash should be:

For older babies between 7 and 9 months, you can pulse rather than blend continuously. This gives a slightly chunky texture that helps babies learn to chew.

Check the puree with a spoon. If it’s too thick, add more liquid and blend again. If it’s too runny, add a bit more cooked fruit or vegetable.

As your baby becomes comfortable with individual ingredients, try mixing flavours. Some great combinations include:
